GOVERNMENT OF ABIA STATE COME TO THE AID OF MY PEOPLE: ITUNTA IBERE COMMUNITY IN IKWUANO LGA ABIA STATE..
IT WAS SO BAD THAT DAY, I AND MY FAMILY COULDN'T GET ACROSS; FOR FEAR OF DROWNING OR SOMETHING WORSE. SORRY ABOUT THE IMAGE DISABILITY, IT HAS BEEN FIXED NOW.
This bridge is the only link to my maternal grand mother's home, Itunta Ibere in Ikwuano LGA of Abia
State. The community is the major cocoa , food and other cash crop producing community in the state. It is the only link road to other communities in the area, the Local Government Head Quarter, Abia State capital Umuahia and other markets for community's agricultural produce. As it is now the community has no other road and are therefore stuck to the community. They cannot come out and nobody can get to them. Their farm produce which include cocoa, sea foods, yams, cassava (processed garri and other cassava related by products are wasting a way.
This bridge (a hanging iron bridge), which was locally fabricated by the people to enable them ease of movement instead of using tree trunks and planks which was/is highly unsafe, has now collapsed with one end buried in the fast flowing water that has now overflown its banks due the heavy rain fall.. This bridge is well over 45yrs, constructed before the civil war has being managed and maintained by the community through communal effort.
Its collapsed as a result of lack of maintenance. According to reports reaching me, a heavy down pour of rain caused this damage. Thankfully, no life was lost. The only way the people are able to use the bridge is to hold on tightly to the side of the bridge that is still connected and move as slowly-as-possible, and hope the bridge does not collapse as they are passing it.
I hereby, beg the Local Government, the Governor and Government of Abia State to come to the aid of these people, my people and construct a good workable bridge for them.
My people are suffering, their farm crops are wasting, they cannot even access other community or market to meet their basic market needs.
